Wild Wednesday: Owls at Greyhope Bay

Barn owl taken by Peter Shand.

“I wonder if we get owls at Greyhope Bay”, we asked. Apparently yes, we do!

1) This barn owl (Tyto alba) (image credit: Peter Shand) was found sheltering in one of the old buildings in the battery. Those who saw it said it looked tired and suspected it might have been blown across from the continent in bad weather, seeking refuge in the battery’s walls. Although barn owls have historically faced threats, particularly from the use of the now banned pesticide DDT, they are still a widespread bird and are classed as “least concern” by the RSPB.

2) Also spotted at Greyhope Bay, not long after asking if we get owls at the battery, was this short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) (image credit: Andrew Whitehouse). These owls are unlike barn owls as they often hunt during the day, so you might be in with a good chance of seeing one on your next visit! They are also joined in the winter by migrants from the continent, which could explain why they have been spotted at Greyhope Bay. Short-eared owls are amber listed birds due to their conservation status in Europe, so its exciting to see them around the battery!

Want to help our recording efforts? Tell us what you see out and about the battery! Either send us a message on social media, use a sighting card at the cafe, or join us on our monthly bird surveys! Heading

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
