About the tour

Explore Aberdeen’s fascinating history as you walk along the coastline and hear local stories and folklore, and look out for exciting wildlife including our bottlenose dolphins.

Set between the north and south harbours, this corner of Aberdeen is packed with history, stories, and nature. As we walk along the coastal path, you’ll learn about Aberdeen’s maritime history, the shipwrecks that led to Girdleness Lighthouse being built, and folklore stories. We’ll walk to Torry Battery, a historic monument dating back to 1860 which was used as a military base, emergency housing, and a playground.

Today, Torry Battery is home to the Greyhope Bay Centre, an off-grid Café and Centre with beautiful views over Aberdeen and the sea. This is one of the best places in the UK to see bottlenose dolphins, as they are seen here on 80% of days throughout the year. We’ll look for the dolphins and talk about how they are adapted to live in the cold North Sea, some of their behaviour, and watch out for other exciting wildlife (such as gannets, swallows, and Aberdeen’s famous gulls). While we’re here, you can grab a coffee and a snack (we recommend you try a buttery – a local tasty treat). On the way back to the South Harbour, we’ll continue sharing stories about Aberdeen and explore some of it’s more recent history, and see if we can spot some seals resting in the bay.

By booking this tour you are supporting Greyhope Bay, a charity which connects people to each other, and Aberdeen’s beautiful coastline. Your ticket cost helps us cover our operating costs, which allows us to keep offering events (such as free talks, art classes, nature walks) to the public and work with the local community to make positive change in Aberdeen.
